Final Questions for Aperture

This section holds a few last-minute questions asked of Apple, that do not quite fit into the other Q&A section as they were not covered in the original question sheet.

Why is sharpen designed with no threshold adjustment?
Interestingly, here it was indicated that the sharpening algorithm may not be as simple as unsharp mask as was originally thought.  This is an area that requires more exploration, for the algorithm may be more advanced already than previously assumed.

Will Aperture 1.1 show both RAW and JPG versions when importing images shot RAW+JPG?
There exists today an option I had not seen before, if you have imported a RAW file that is also backed by a JPG file you will see a new option when right-clicking on it - create new version from JPG Master.  So one assumes that after an import of many RAW+JPG images you could select them all and batch-create versions based on the JPG as well, which should take up no more space.

Will the new RAW Fine Tune tool be available for all RAW?  For JPG or TIFF?
The RAW Fine Tune Tool is available for any image that requires decoding (basically all RAW).  TIFF and JPG which do not require decoding will not have this tool present.  This does present a compelling reason to use RAW within Aperture as opposed to simply importing generated TIFF files from a different program.

Does 1.1 require OS X 10.4.6?
The version of Aperture shown on the show was running on a build of OS X labeled 10.4.5, so it may or may not be bundled with an OS update.

Will Export ever be non-modal?
This is seen as unlikely given that it is a safe way to export without worry that images will change in the middle of an export.  It was noted Aperture spends as little time on export operations as possible, when you are publishing a web gallery for example the gallery images are exported and then the actual copy of the files to .Mac takes place in the background.  You can monitor this progress (and imports as well) by selecting the Window->Show Task List... menu item in Aperture.

Does the Mac support printers using more than 8-bits for printing?
Canon has a new printer that requires 12-bit printer support.  Canon reps said that the Mac would require a special driver (as does Windows) which is a Photoshop plugin (and possibly a standalone app).  Apple reps were not sure how 12-bit printing might be handled in Aperture and were going to look into the matter.
